The mining\u00a0industry is under pressure to integrate\u00a0innovation\u00a0into core\u00a0business\u00a0operations, to remain competitive globally, to ensure zero harm and to do its part in mitigating against climate change.<\/h2>\n

\u00a0<\/p>\n

The future of\u00a0sustainable\u00a0mining, therefore, lies in\u00a0innovation\u00a0and at the heart of\u00a0innovation\u00a0is\u00a0technology, Trade and Investment Consul at the Israeli Embassy in South\u00a0Africa,\u00a0Amit<\/strong>\u00a0Lev<\/strong>, said on April 26, adding that\u00a0mining\u00a0companies were increasingly understanding the importance of\u00a0innovation, coming out of Covid-19 and its disruptive effect on\u00a0operations.<\/p>\n

The Israel Trade Mission to South\u00a0Africa\u00a0hosted a \u201cFuture of\u00a0Mining\u00a0Technology\u201d conference, highlighting the\u00a0solutions\u00a0Israel could offer the South African\u00a0mining\u00a0industry.<\/p>\n

Israel has more than 300 research and development centres, 6\u00a0000 startup companies and a vibrant\u00a0technology\u00a0ecosystem, through which it hopes to benefit\u00a0mining\u00a0jurisdictions such as South\u00a0Africa\u00a0to become safer, more profitable and more efficient.<\/p>\n

For example, Insight Partners, through its venture capital portfolio of software companies, offers\u00a0solutions\u00a0to increase machine productivity and has worked to make Komatsu machinery, in particular, smarter. The company believes that add-on\u00a0systems\u00a0to heavy machinery are one way to make machinery more efficient and the\u00a0mining\u00a0industry more\u00a0sustainable.<\/p>\n

Another example is Eurotech Communication, which is a leader in communication\u00a0solutions\u00a0for the\u00a0mining\u00a0industry, designing end-to-end\u00a0solutions\u00a0that interconnect distributed smart objects and move valuable data between machines.<\/p>\n

The company believes the \u201cway of the future\u201d for\u00a0mining\u00a0is through managed interfaces between the real world and the digital world, between\u00a0sensors\u00a0and the Web, and devices and the cloud.<\/p>\n

Foresight\u00a0Automation, meanwhile,\u00a0discussed expertise in multispectral imaging, allowing machinery to obtain additional information the human eye can not see, using infrared\u00a0sensors. It believes this kind of\u00a0technology\u00a0is vital for mine site\u00a0safety\u00a0and collision avoidance.<\/p>\n

A company called Razor Labs<\/strong> highlighted how it uses \u201cdeep learning\u201d to make machinery smarter, for more efficient\u00a0operations\u00a0and to enable predictive\u00a0maintenance\u00a0to be done \u2013 this artificial intelligence (AI)\u00a0technology\u00a0can often predict machine failures weeks in advance.<\/p>\n

Next, GOARC described how\u00a0mining\u00a0companies can reach operational excellence and the next level of profitability using its software-as-a-service-based\u00a0safety\u00a0platform, which offers a real-time view of a plant\u2019s operational reality, with visualisation and dynamic work activities, as well as\u00a0risk management.<\/p>\n

The company uses predictive AI-powered digital\u00a0solutions\u00a0to connect people and\u00a0aggregate\u00a0disparate data from\u00a0systems,\u00a0sensors\u00a0and human-derived activities.<\/p>\n

The companies all agree that\u00a0mining\u00a0companies need to clearly define their use case for\u00a0technology\u00a0and be aware of the value that certain technologies can create, for that particular use case.<\/p>\n

The experts speaking at the conference pointed out that knowledge about\u00a0mining\u00a0has become non-optional for\u00a0safety\u00a0and\u00a0efficiency, as\u00a0mining\u00a0companies are increasingly under pressure to reduce redundancy, be more profitable and meet\u00a0key performance indicators.<\/p>\n

The panelists reiterated their understanding that for\u00a0mining\u00a0companies\u00a0reducing\u00a0downtime is paramount and, therefore, their appreciation of the need\u00a0to install their respective technologies as quickly as possible and without impacts to surrounding\u00a0operations.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0solutions\u00a0on offer by these companies are often \u201cplug-and-play\u201d based, for easy integration and\u00a0installation.<\/p>\n
