Ambient temperature sensor faults in haul trucks can silently degrade engine performance by corrupting the air-fuel ratio calculations used by the engine control module. DataMind AI continuously monitors sensor readings and fleet-wide comparisons, enabling early detection of anomalies that would otherwise go unnoticed during routine inspections.
In this case, DataMind AI identified that a CAT 793D haul truck was reporting ambient temperature readings significantly lower than the rest of the fleet over a five-month period. The affected truck showed daytime readings of 18-36°C and nighttime readings of 9-24°C, while other 793D trucks in the same operating environment reported 35-51°C during the day and 28-42°C at night. The truck also had an elevated exhaust temperature delta value for several months.
The engine ECM uses the ambient temperature reading as a key input to define the correct air-fuel ratio. With incorrect values, the ECM modifies fuel delivery, affecting engine performance and potentially driving abnormal exhaust temperatures. The root cause was identified as an incorrectly positioned or faulty ambient air temperature sensor.
Based on the diagnosis, the maintenance team was advised to inspect and relocate the sensor per Caterpillar media M0163875, test the electrical signal, and replace the sensor if necessary. The operation avoided degraded engine performance and potential exhaust system damage.
